If you have read our Cocoon Chill mattress review, you’re already familiar with the brand. If you have not — feel free to visit that review, while I focus on their hybrid variant in this article. But don't worry, in this Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress review we’re gonna compare them both as well.

With the hybrid mattress, you get both the soft surface of the memory foam layer, and also the sturdiness of the inner coil layer. In the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress, the coils also help the cooling system, which is the delight and the key feature of this bed.

Most of us probably hate feeling cold, unless it's during sleep. Actually, heat can wake you up several times per night. I’m gonna be Captain Obvious here and say that’s far from ideal. Well, this Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress review might offer a solution for that issue, among several other beneficial features.

Verdict at a glance

The Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress has a great cooling system and is wonderful for hot sleepers. It has reasonable support for back sleepers, but is not as effective for side sleepers or people of heavier weight. It has reasonable motion isolation and fair edge support.

Pros

  • Great for hot sleepers
  • Good for people with back pain
  • Good motion isolation

Cons

  • Not a good fit for heavier weight people
  • Not great for side sleepers
  • 30-day break-in period

Cocoon Chill Hybrid Mattress Review: Pros

I myself love a hybrid mattress option. I think it’s quite universal and can suit the needs of both those who want a memory foam mattress feel, but also want enough support as the innerspring beds usually have.

In this Cocoon Chill mattress review for their hybrid model (you can read our review about the foam variant here), not only will you find out about getting that combination of foam and springs, but also about the exceptional cooling system that you can buff up as well.

Mattress Type

Chill Hybrid mattress is, as its name suggests, a hybrid mattress type. This means that it’s made out of both memory foam and coils. The premium foam adapts to your specific body type, thus helping to keep your spinal alignment intact, as well as reduce the focus on your other pressure points.

Each coil is wrapped in fabric individually. This results in reduced motion transfer and better-targeted support for your body at the spots it’s needed.

Cocoon chill mattress review: hybrid mattress structure

Individually encased coils also mean the mattress will make very little noise. With connected coils, if one coil made a squeak, it would be transferred to the others, making them squeak as well. In this case, the noise sort of stays within that individual coil, resulting in less noise overall.

The Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress has Perfect Fit memory foam, which highly adapts to your body contours and sleeping position.

Layer Composition

The Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress consists of 3 layers, and a cooling cover, in total 12 inches of height. Let's start at the top with the cooling cover. This cover absorbs and disperses heat and you’ll still have a cool-to-the-touch surface of your mattress.

Under that, there's the Perfect Fit memory foam layer. This foam will adapt to your individual and distinct body shape, size, and sleeping position.

Cocoon chill mattress review: hybrid mattress construction

The next one down is a layer of active support coils. Each coil is wrapped in fabric individually, and this layer has a reinforced perimeter. Both these features mean this mattress will give you highly targeted support. The original memory foam variant has a responsive comfort foam layer instead of the coils.

The bottom layer is meant purely for support, working as a base for all the other materials in the mattress. It is engineered to be immensely durable and resistant to damage.

Cooling

This mattress is called Chill for a reason. Temperature neutrality is the pride and joy of the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress. The Phase Change Material (PCM) absorbs our body heat, and then it releases that energy back, but only as needed.

Therefore, it actively works on temperature regulation only when you need it to. And that helps you sleep cooler. In addition, the Bolsa coils guide the excess heat through breathable springs, which help you to stay cool for longer.

Cocoon chill mattress review: air circulation in between coils

While making the purchase, you can add even more cooling. The Extra-Chill technology is so cool, it makes the ice cubes jealous. It is Cocoon’s newest innovation, where they added PCM to their memory foam, and wrapped it in an even cooler cover.

The cover itself is also very breathable, and has the already-mentioned PCM technology. The stretch-knit fabric is made from various elastic fibers. This means that not only the cover of your Sealy Cocoon Chill mattress will be easy to put on the mattress/bed, but it also will last quite a long time.

Firmness

The Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress is rated 6 on the mattress firmness scale. This means it can be described as medium firm, and it should be right in the middle between soft and firm. Therefore, this Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress should be right for you, if you love a balance between two firmness levels.

Aside from just the preference, the medium firm option also is more beneficial if you have back pain issues. Soft mattresses will mean back sleepers will sink in too much, and if the mattress is properly firm, it would not successfully adjust to the curvature of your spine.

Medium firm is the great interim in between, where it can both adapt to your body shape and provide needed support. Thus, such firmness level is most likely to alleviate your back pain.

Cocoon chill mattress review: hybrid mattress firmness

This Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress works well for couples. Due to good motion isolation, you will feel only a little part of your partner’s movement during sleep. Or they yours. On top of that, due to the same reason and due to the ease of changing positions, this mattress is quite a decent choice for sex, too.

Do have in mind that the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress does have the coil layer. Over time (i.e. in several years or so) coils can start producing squeaking, which is considerably not ideal, especially during the fun part.

Motion Isolation

Firstly, I’d like to clarify a couple of similar terms. What is motion transfer and what is motion isolation? Motion transfer is when your partner in bed (whether it’s your romantic partner, your child, or a pet) moves around, and you can feel that movement or that disturbance on your side of the bed.

Or vice versa, of course. High motion transfer means you can feel those movements strongly, while low motion transfer means you would barely feel a thing.

Motion isolation is exactly the opposite. It’s how well you don’t feel whatever else is happening in your bed. If there is strong motion isolation, you can sleep calmly without feeling your bedmate’s movements.

Cocoon chill mattress review: close up of a corner of the mattress

It also means that you will have less movement yourself, even while sleeping alone. And that is beneficial because you will be less likely to wake yourself up from your own movement. Essentially, you won’t feel the bed as directly, and therefore will not be disturbed by your own movements, resulting in a better sleep quality overall.

Aside from the obvious inconvenience or even annoyance about regularly waking up during the night, sleep disruptions can have more subtle effects too. Disturbed sleep can lead to issues with the emotion generation process[1].

Having a coil layer usually means poor motion isolation. That is simply due to the springs — springs transfer motion quite easily. However, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress has pocketed coils. This means that every coil is wrapped individually.

Therefore, most of the movement stays within the single coil, and only a small amount in comparison gets transferred to another coil. In other words, due to the support coil layer, you will feel very little of your partners’ movements. This benefit is even more present due to the slow-moving memory foam layer.

Edge Support

The main coils are surrounded by narrower responsive coils, creating a sturdier edge around the full perimeter. This Quantum Edge technology creates a good-quality edge support. Individuals or couples should not worry about getting too close to the edge at night, and for most people, sitting on an edge should not create problems either.

This means you have more of the mattress to sleep on as well, without needing to avoid the edges. There were some customer Cocoon Chill mattress reviews (for the hybrid model, of course) with the opposite impressions.

Cocoon chill mattress review: reinforced perimeter

Those reviews stated that sleeping closer to the edge was fine, but sitting on the brink of the mattress flattened it down too much. There are significantly more reviews, complimenting the edge support. However, it may be something worth having in mind, especially if you’re on the heavier side.

In addition to edge support, such coil structure (i.e narrower coils around the perimeter) contributes to the durability of the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress. More reliable edge support means less sagging over a prolonged period of time. Thus it also means your hybrid mattress will stay in good shape for longer.

Good for Back and Combination Sleepers

Usually memory foam mattresses are considered the best for back sleepers or someone who has back pain issues. The foam layer helps to distribute your weight across the mattress, rather than keeping it in one place. This way, you don’t have as much tension coming from the mattress onto your pressure points.

For sleeping on the back, those pressure points are shoulders, lower back, and hips. And making sure your back has a good rest is quite important. Low back pain was the main reason for developing a disability back in 2018[2]. One of the most natural and effortless ways to mitigate back pain is to have a suitable mattress for sleep.

Since the Sealy Cocoon Chill mattress has that memory foam layer right beneath the cooling cover, the mattress works pretty well for back sleepers. It distributes your weight quite evenly. In addition, the pocketed coils layer provides the needed support instead of making you significantly sink in.

Cocoon chill mattress review: a girl sleeping on the back

The individually wrapped coils also mean the bed better adapts to your body shape, helping to keep your spine alignment intact.

The Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress bed would also be quite good for combination sleepers. Due to good motion isolation from the memory foam, and the sturdy support from the pocketed coils, regularly changing positions during sleep should not be bothersome. To elaborate, the support from the coils will allow you to change positions easily.

If it was just a memory foam mattress, you could easily be engulfed by it too much and have a slight struggle to turn from one side to the other or such. In addition, good motion isolation means that constant tossing and turning will not disturb your actual sleep and won’t wake you up while you’re moving around.

Cocoon Chill Hybrid Mattress Review: Cons

So far, we’ve talked about only the beneficial aspects of the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress. But like any other product, it’s not ideal and not exactly suitable for absolutely everyone.

Not Great for Side and Heavy Sleepers

I’ve already mentioned the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress being good for back sleepers. Now, if you’re a side sleeper, that’s a bit of a different story.

While some user Cocoon Chill mattress reviews claim that they don’t really feel shoulder pain while lying on the side on the hybrid, there are still more of such reviews that actually don’t feel too comfortable about it in comparison.

Some (especially lighter-weight) sleepers might enjoy this mattress nonetheless. However, for the most part the shoulders would sink a bit too deep into the foam layer, that way creating some pressure. This is quite emphasized if you’re of heavier weight.

The Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress is actually not as suitable for heavier weight sleepers overall. Heavier weight back sleepers might be okay, but the general issue is that heavy sleepers tend to sink in a bit too much into this mattress, thus creating noticeable tension to the pressure points.

Cocoon chill mattress review: man sleeping on the side

This is also noted for stomach sleepers. Due to the mentioned sinkage, there is too much pressure on the hips for a fully enjoyable and healthy night’s sleep. And once again, heavier sleepers will experience this aspect more than lightweight sleepers.

Our top recommendation for both heavier-weight sleepers and side sleepers is either Saatva or Saatva HD. Both these options are innerspring mattresses, but they’re very responsive (i.e. they can quickly adapt to your body contour). Both beds offer great pressure relief and cool sleep.

Saatva HD is specifically designed for heavy people (over 300lbs), with some extra firmness to offer that additional support for the body weight. Regular Saatva offers 3 firmness options, while Saatva HD offers only one.

Lack of Plush Feel

It’s not exactly a con of the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress as such, but it is something relevant that some sleepers may dislike. As mentioned, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress is medium firm. This means that it would not give that super comfortable, plush feeling. You know, where it feels like you’re being hugged.

Its medium firmness is a great feature for providing support. But if you’re one of those who likes to feel like they’re being cuddled during sleep (I know I do), you would likely benefit from looking into memory foam mattresses instead.

The best memory foam mattress in the market at the time is Puffy. It suits all types of sleepers, has a lifetime warranty, is great for those dealing with back pain, and has a very affordable price tag.

Size

If you already have experience purchasing a new mattress, you may already be aware of what size is the most suitable for you and your bedroom setup. If not, let me guide you through it. To start with, the sizes that the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress comes in are as follows:

  • Twin — 74.5x38 inches
  • Twin XL — 79.5x38 inches
  • Full — 74.5x53 inches
  • Queen — 79.5x60 inches
  • King — 79.5x76 inches
  • Cal King — 83.5x72 inches

Twin or Twin XL is mostly suitable for children/teenagers, up to the age of college students. In theory, it can be suitable for an adult too, but it most likely would not be comfortable sleeping on it.

Full is suitable for single sleepers and, in theory, couples. I say in theory, because while you would be able to squeeze in with your partner, that would likely not feel too comfortable.

At the moment, Queen size is the most popular mattress size in the US due to its versatility. As a single sleeper, it provides you plenty of room. As a couple, you would both fit with reasonable space left to sleep more or less comfortably.

King size will allow a couple to sleep comfortably, and will fit a child or a pet on it as well. California King has almost the same surface area as the King mattress, it’s just a bit longer and narrower. It’s great for those who want the King mattress, but are taller.

Cocoon chill mattress review: mattress with Cocoon foundation

It’s also highly suitable for couples, whose pets tend to sleep at the end of the bed, since this mattress size is meant to focus on the length, rather than the width.

So which size should you choose? Well, they say a Full size mattress is perfectly suitable for a single sleeper. I say blasphemy to that. While my name isn’t Patrick, I do often sleep like a starfish.

I also toss and turn quite a lot during the night. So while I’m not that afraid of falling out of bed like I used to during childhood, I definitely enjoy not needing to adjust myself to the center. With a bigger mattress size, I’m able to have all the space I want. And so should you.

Cocoon chill mattress review: sitting on the cover of hybrid mattress

You deserve to take up as much space as you want, and just the royal treatment overall. So I would advocate considering one of the bigger 'royal' sizes (Queen, King, or Cal King), even if you sleep by yourself. Decent, good mattresses often have a lifespan of about 10 years, or even more.

I of course don’t know your lifestyle choices, but statistically it’s likely you won’t sleep on your own for that long. Partners, children, pets. Or simply the realization that you deserve the best size there is and treat yourself to the Cocoon by Sealy Chill soft California King Memory Foam mattress.

Of course, there can be some practical restrictions when you’re sure you want a smaller mattress size. For example, you have a low door or just not much space in the room.

For example, standard door height in the US is around 80 inches, so the Cocoon by Sealy Chill soft California King Memory Foam mattress may not fit easily, and you would need to move it around while carrying it in.

Pricing and Additional Details

Usually people consider buying a mattress quite in advance, and are able to plan their budget accordingly. You think the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress would be a more spontaneous purchase, and you’re not sure if your wallet can say goodbye to several hundred dollars at once (as much as it would be worth it)?

Don’t worry, Cocoon offers a financing option to pay in installments over 12 months, as long as the purchase is at least $500.

The Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress price is as follows:

For additional $200 (not depending on the mattress size), you can add the Extra-Chill Hybrid option.

If we compare these prices with the competitors, we see that the top brands in the market, which offer hybrid mattress models, do mostly have lower prices. For example, Saatva hybrid costs $1574 for a Queen size mattress (difference of about $120). The price of Layla Hybrid is the same for that size, but is about $100 lower for King or California King.

So you might want to look into either of those mattress brands — Saatva can offer a top tier edge support, and Layla is great for side sleepers. It does seem that at the moment the discounted prices are more affordable with Cocoon.

For example, Layla Hybrid Queen mattress at the time of writing costs $1499 and the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress in Queen size is $1099. It is worth having in mind that prices change all the time.

Table: Price comparison of Saatva and Layla mattresses

Another thing to note is that Cocoon adds the pillows and sheets bundle for free to every Sealy Cocoon Chill mattress purchase, so that’s some additional value. So you might want to research the options for the best deal among the other brands as well before deciding on the specific purchase.

Every Sealy Cocoon Chill mattress purchase gets a gift of Cocoon’s pillows and sheets bundle. Separately the bundle starts at $150, therefore such a special deal is absolutely worth your attention.

DreamFit sheets are made from 100% cotton, remarkably soft to the touch. They’re constructed to last a long time. The pillows are actually two-sided. One side of them is foam, for the soft, plush feeling. The other side is polyester fiber — for those times when your head needs more support.

Cocoon chill mattress review: Cocoon pillows

I don’t know about you, but I actually love this kind of versatility, especially for sleep products. If you’re flipping over from the excitement of such double feature, Layla actually offers flippable mattresses — for both memory foam and hybrid options.

If you add a Sealy Ease Power Base to your Sealy Cocoon Chill mattress purchase, you will also get a $200 gift that will be immediately applied to your shopping cart. This adjustable bed’s head raises up to 57°, and the foot end raises up to 46°.

It also has a Zero Gravity preset. This preset slightly lifts the head and the foot ends, to simulate weightlessness. It also improves circulation while sleeping (or, of course, using the bed while you’re awake as well).

Shipping and Warranties

The Cocoon by Sealy Chill mattress is designed and built solely in the USA. Cocoon has a manufacturing plant in Mississippi, that’s where they ship their finished products from as well.

Once you place an order for your Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress, the bed is assembled within 2 business days, and delivered via UPS Ground mail within 5-7 business days after that.

You can also arrange for expedited shipping or a Saturday delivery. The specific delivery dates and costs depend on a case-by-case basis, so just give them a call with your particular request to get a quota and conditions.

Cocoon chill mattress review: Cocoon hybrid mattress with the box

The Sealy Cocoon Chill mattress is delivered compacted in a box. As with many other bed-in-a-box products, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress has some unpleasant smell upon unpacking, which is usually referred to as off-gassing. However, the off-gassing should wear off in the following 24-48 hours at most.

The shipping is absolutely free of charge within the US, with the exceptions of Hawaii and Alaska. Cocoon will still ship your mattress without issues to those states as well, there will simply be some shipping fees involved. They do not yet ship internationally, but that is within the brand’s future plans.

As for their return policy, you can return your bed and get the full refund within the first 100 nights. They do, however, have a policy of a 30-day break-in period for you to get used to the mattress. A good number of people can tell if they're unhappy about their mattress quite earlier than that, so it could create quite an inconvenience for some.

Cocoon chill mattress review: policies

The return is also free (aside from the mentioned two states), and you won’t need to deal with the hassle of giving back the physical mattress either. Cocoon representatives will come to your house and take the mattress away for you.

Even more, they will not simply dispose of it, but instead they will donate it to a local charity. That’s incredibly wholesome, I’d say.

Pillows and sheets bundle, however, is not returnable. Per Cocoon’s policies, that is due to the personal nature of these products. Sealy Ease power bases are not returnable either, but if you have issues with this product, just give Cocoon a call or an email, and they’ll do their best to make things right for you.

It is worth noting that these policies are applicable only to products bought directly through the Cocoon website. By default, the Sealy Cocoon Chill mattress can be ordered only directly, on Cocoon’s website.

Cocoon chill mattress review: Cocoon adjustable base

However, certain models are available through Costco stores. If you buy it from Costco or manage to find it in another retail store, the return and refund policies would depend on the store you bought it from instead.

The usual industry standard for hybrid mattress warranties is 10 years. Here, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress is not an exception.
The warranty covers damages like tearing of the cooling cover or indents, larger than 1 inch. The company is confident, though, in their extensive testing and quality for the latter to be just a hypothetical issue.

Cocoon Chill Memory Foam Mattress vs. Cocoon Chill Hybrid Mattress

If you already have tried, or at least if you have heard of the Sealy Cocoon Chill mattress before, you’re probably wondering how the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress compares to it.

Well, I am at your service. It is a little bit complicated to directly compare a memory foam to a hybrid mattress, so one is not inherently better than the other. It’s all about what you want and need in a mattress.

Materials and Composition

Both mattresses have 4 layers. 3 of the layers are the same — the cooling cover (with the Phase Change Material, and the option of the additional Extra-Chill technology), the perfect fit memory foam, and the essential support layer on the base.

The difference is in the third layer from the top. As mentioned in the Cocoon Chill mattress review, it has the responsive cotton foam, while the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress support comes from the pocketed coils.

The responsive comfort foam is there to offer additional support for your body. It reduces motion transfer and reduces the strong sinking feeling that is standard to memory foam mattresses.

Cocoon chill mattress review: foam mattress construction

This layer composition means that the Sealy Cocoon Chill mattress will have better motion isolation than the hybrid variant, and will give you even more of the plush feeling. However, due to the pocketed coils, the hybrid mattress will offer better support, as well as more ease to change sleep positions and move around.

On top of that, pocketed coils help to increase the airflow within the mattress (because the air can move in between the individually wrapped coils), while memory foam mattresses usually sleep quite hot.

Firmness and Durability

Usually, full memory foam mattresses are softer than hybrid ones. For Cocoon, both mattresses are given a score of 6 on the softness/firmness scale. It just shows that you can reach similar results in different ways, in this case — same level of medium firmness, while using different materials.

This means that despite the usual qualities of memory foam beds, the Cocoon by Sealy Chill mattress will be able to provide reasonable support. At the same time, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress will still be able to offer the softness that’s typical for the memory foam beds instead.

One thing that does differ is the durability. Memory foam mattresses have a shorter lifespan, compared to hybrid ones. In addition, the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress has the narrower responsive coils around the mattress’ perimeter.

Not only this creates a better edge support, but it also increases the bed’s durability in comparison to the memory foam variant.

Responsiveness and Pressure Relief

I’ll cut to the chase — memory foam mattresses usually have noticeably better responsiveness and pressure relief. The Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress does mitigate that to an extent.

While there is only one memory foam layer, the pocketed coils help the mattress to conform to your body shape reasonably better than a full innerspring mattress would. However, it still has some uneasiness to your shoulders and hips while sleeping on the side.

Cocoon chill mattress review: pocketed coils

And if you’re a heavier person, you will likely have some discomfort while sleeping on your stomach as well, for the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress. As you probably have read in the Cocoon Chill mattress review, that bed does have pretty good responsiveness overall.

The foam conforms pretty well to your body, and distributes the weight around the mattress. It also limits the level of you sinking down, which significantly helps to keep your spine well-aligned during the night, when you don’t really have a control over its alignment yourself.

Size and Weight

As can be expected, the Cocoon by Sealy Chill Memory Foam mattress weighs less than the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress. For example, the Cocoon by Sealy chill, soft California king memory foam mattress weighs 82.5 lbs, while its hybrid counterpart — 105 lbs.

That’s about one and one fourth of the memory foam equivalent. The Sealy Cocoon Chill mattress is also shorter by 2 inches than the hybrid bed.

Price

As you can find in our Cocoon Chill mattress review, this mattress is priced at $1239 for the Queen size (at the time of writing only $799), while the Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress Queen is $1699 (at the time of writing discounted to $1099). It is normal for hybrid beds to be more expensive than memory foam variants.

That is mainly due to more costly materials used, in addition to just memory foam. Prices for both of these mattresses are a bit above the average range of the market. As mentioned earlier, there are more popular brands, offering hybrid models for lower prices. Cocoon does have the extra pillows and sheets included, so that may be a factor for your decision.

Table: The features of mattresses from Saatva, Puffy, and Layla

Both mattresses have the option to add Extra-Chill technology. They also have the additional bundle offer for the two dual-sided pillows and DreamFit sheets. The special offer of the $200 gift for a Sealy Ease power base applies just the same for either of the beds as well.

Because both mattresses are under the same brand, naturally, all the shipping and delivery procedures and policies are the same between the two.

Conclusions

In this Cocoon Chill mattress review, we’ve presented the new Chill Hybrid model of this mattress brand. The original memory foam variant has been already reviewed by us. This product definitely lives up to its name.

Its cooling cover with the Phase Change Material is designed so that you don’t wake up in the middle of the night from sleeping too warm. Increased airflow in between pocketed coils and available customization of adding Extra-Chill technology will help to ensure that.

The Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress is medium firm and has decent motion isolation (as can be expected from a hybrid model). Edge support has received some mixed reviews and while his bed is quite well suitable for back and combination sleepers, it may cause discomfort to side sleepers and users of heavier weight.

So all in all, this is a great choice for a mattress if you’re a hot back sleeper. However, if you fall into other categories, you might want to look into other brands — such as Saatva, Layla, or Puffy — for something to suit your needs better instead.

FAQ

Is Cocoon Chill Hybrid Mattress good for hot sleepers?

Yes, that's exactly whom it's meant for. The Cocoon Chill Hybrid mattress has integrated Phase Change Material. It absorbs your body heat and releases it only when it's needed.
