Sleep is perhaps the simplest, yet most-beloved pleasure in life. It’s a wonderful hybrid of coziness, relaxation, and a sense of security, all topped off with a bow of great health. And speaking about hybrids - that’s exactly what I will be writing about in this Luma mattress review!

First and foremost, a quick introduction to Luma Sleep. Since being founded in 2016, the U.S.-based company set off on a mission to bring the ultimate sleep experience to their customers. And whether or not they succeeded will be revealed in this article.

In this Luma mattress review, you will find my in-depth analysis of the Luma hybrid mattress - what features I liked about the product, what downsides should be kept in mind while considering this model, and what the price tags say. And for the grand finale, we will compare the star of the show with other similar mattresses to really get to know Luma.

And on that note, let’s jump right into this Luma mattress review!

TL;DR: the Luma hybrid mattress brings together latex and innerspring coils. The hypoallergenic cooling mattress comes in 3 firmness levels, all of which offer great resistance and support. This is a great choice for sleepers on the lighter side that don’t experience a lot of pressure pain.

Pros

  • High-quality hybrid construction
  • Cooling properties
  • Several firmness levels
  • Great for couples

Cons

  • Can be too firm to some
  • Not the best motion isolation

Luma Mattress Review: PROS

Let’s kick this Luma mattress review off on a positive note. After all, there are quite a few perks the mattress has to offer!

Exceptional Hybrid Construction

We all know the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover”, right? Well, it applies to mattresses, too!

One of the best and easiest ways to really get to know what the mattress has to offer is by looking at what’s on the inside.

When it comes to Luma mattresses, the hybrid construction combines high-quality latex with a sturdy base of pocket coils. This creates a supportive and pleasantly responsive surface to sleep on.

Luma Mattress Review: layers of the mattress.

Latex is inherently on the firmer side, so, if you don’t like sinking too deep into your bed, the Luma hybrid mattress might be perfect for you.

On that note, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty and see exactly what this mattress is made out of. The 11-inch hybrid consists of 4 layers total.

  • First and foremost, we have the cover of the mattress. The Luma hybrid mattress features a breathable comfort cover made out of Tencel, which is a recycled material that is well-known for keeping moisture away from you and maintaining temperature neutrality.
  • Second, we have the star of the show - a 2-inch layer of open-cell latex. This is what gives the Luma hybrid mattress that resistance to keep you buoyant on top of it. In addition, latex is one of the most durable materials that can be used in a mattress, so this model can be a great life-long investment.
  • Next is the 8-inch pocket coil layer. Along with offering a lot of support and just the right amount of bounce while you sleep, the coils allow for a lot of airflow, making the mattress delightfully cool to sleep on.
  • And finally, we have come to the 1-inch base layer of extra-dense polyfoam. This layer doesn’t affect the way your Luma mattress feels in any way - its main function is to give the coils a sturdy layer to rest on and keep the entire mattress nice and stable.

While there aren't many layers that make the Luma mattress, you can still see that every one of them had a lot of thought put in to assure maximum comfort and adaptability to each customer.

However, let's take a moment to look at the second layer of the mattress, which is made out of latex

Though more expensive than the popular foam models, latex-based mattresses have many notable benefits. For example, latex makes a mattress quite durable, hypoallergenic, and is known to help many relieve pain in shoulders and hips.

Luma Mattress Review: the mattress all set up.

In addition, because latex is so responsive and has plenty of bounce, mattresses that feature this material are highly recommended for the elderly and those who have mobility issues and have a hard time getting out of bed.

As you can see, latex mattresses are definitely worth your attention. But, that being said, there are many more perks we have to discuss in our Luma mattress review, so let's not waste any time and get right into it.

Three Firmness Levels To Choose From

We are all different. What will suit me might not be an ideal match for you. And that is totally okay! Having different preferences and needs is what makes the world a more interesting place to live in.

With that in mind, it might make it more difficult to choose the best mattress for you. If you are someone who likes a very soft mattress that makes you feel like you're sleeping on a cloud, you will most likely not enjoy a more firm sleeping surface.

Luma Mattress Review: demonstration of firmness.

Well, Luma believes that everyone deserves to find their perfect mattress. That's why their latex hybrid model comes with three different firmness levels you can choose from - Plush, Medium, and Firm.

The different firmness levels can be described as 4, 6, and 7 on the firmness scale. This can be concidered as medium-firm-to-firm mattress.

This is a pretty good range, however, it’s important to note that the difference between the Medium and Firm models is pretty small.

If you aren’t sure which model you should choose, here is a handy little guide as a reference.

  • Luma Mattress Plush

This is pretty much the perfect mattress for average and lightweight side sleepers. If you fall somewhere under 230 lbs and like to sleep on your side, you might feel some notable pain relief in your shoulders and hips, which, as we all know, can get a bit sore when sleeping on your side.

If you prefer sleeping on your back or stomach you will most likely find the Plush Luma mattress to be too soft for you and have you sinking a bit too deep into it. This is especially important to note if you are above average weight, as the plush surface can cause too much arching in your spine, leading to discomfort and possibly even pain.

  • Luma Mattress Medium

The most universally-suitable model, the Medium Luma mattress is noted to be comfortable to the vast majority of owners, especially side and back sleepers.

That being said, if you are on the heavier side and like to sleep on your stomach, you might still find this mattress to be a bit too soft and lacking in important support.

  • Luma Mattress Firm

If you like your mattress to have quite some resistance, then the Firm model is definitely worth your attention.

Most ideal for average and heavier sleepers that prefer sleeping on their backs and stomachs, the Firm Luma mattress is just firm enough to have your spine remain straight right throughout the night.

But if you’re a lightweight fetal position enthusiast, the Plush model would be a much better fit for you, as the Firm mattress might have you waking up more sore than you were the night before.

It’s quite safe to say that Luma has kept the different needs of their customers in mind throughout the entire design process, as the mattress is pretty much created to be as universal as possible.

This has been pointed out by satisfied customers in many Luma mattress reviews, as the mattress was pretty much a perfect match most of the time.

Pleasantly Cooling

There are all kinds of sleeper types - light sleepers, restless sleepers, those that can only sleep with white noise in the background… But have you ever heard of cool sleepers?

While everyone is pretty cool in my book, this term refers to individuals who tend to need extra blankets and maybe even a heater to not catch too much of a chill at night.

Similarly, hot sleepers don’t care about monsters that might lurk under their bed and can spend the entire night without a blanket, simply to avoid overheating.

Luma Mattress Review: woman sleeping peacefully.

When it comes to the Luma mattress, I would recommend it the most to hot sleepers, as it has some notable cooling properties, that are exceptionally important for a good night's sleep[1].

Latex mattresses naturally sleep quite cool and helps prevent overheating, which was a perk mentioned in many owner Luma mattress reviews.

So, if you live somewhere near the equator, are referred to by friends as hot-blooded, or simply have some super powerful heating in your home, this Luma sleep mattress can really help you get some well-deserved refreshing sleep.

Couples Love It

A bed can be a lot of things - a spot where you relax after a long day, your personal space where you can focus on yourself, or if you sleep with a partner, a place where love and romance can bloom.

That’s right. A mattress has to not only be comfortable enough to sleep right through the night on - it’s also important to be suitable for more intimate bedroom activities.

And I have some great news for couples, as the Luma hybrid mattress can be a great addition to the bedroom (if you know what I mean).

Luma Mattress Review: couple sleeping.

The coils offer a pleasant bounce that is very important for sex, making maintaining and switching positions pretty much effortless. In addition, the reinforced edges make it possible for you to freely move all over the mattress, without the feeling of instability or lack of needed support.

At the same time, the latex comfort layer contours and hugs the body, so it not only gives enough grip to keep you from sliding around when you shouldn’t but makes sure there are no pressure sores afterward.

And, of course, the durability of latex assures that you will be enjoying your Luma companion for many years to come!

Luma Mattress Review: best features of the mattress.

As you can see, the Luma sleep mattress has quite some pros to keep in mind while considering it. From high-quality materials and construction to different firmness options - Luma has thought of pretty much everything!

Luma Mattress Review: CONS

Even though the perks are truly wonderful, this Luma mattress review wouldn’t be complete without taking off the rose-colored glasses and taking a look at some downsides you should keep in mind.

In this part of my article, I will highlight some aspects of the Luma hybrid mattress that everyone considering it should be aware of, simply to make as informed of a decision as possible.

Can Be A Bit Too Firm For Some

As I’ve already mentioned previously, there are three firmness levels buyers can choose from. This is a wonderful feature for a mattress to have, however, there is something to note.

The Plush model is rated a 4, the Medium a 6, and the Firm a 7 on the firmness scale. While these are pretty standard ratings, latex is inherently firmer than, for example, memory foam or polyfoam.

Luma Mattress Review: elderly woman getting up with back pain.

In addition, the Medium and Firm models are rated very similarly, leaving a bigger gap between them and the Plush option.

If you find the Plush to be a bit too soft, there is a chance that the Medium would be too firm for you, without there being an in-between option available.

If you are more sensitive and don’t like firm mattresses, the Luma hybrid might not be right for you, as the lack of a true middle-ground option makes it harder to find a suitable option.

The Luma mattress reviews left bu customers who tend to experience pressure pain[2] suggest going for a softer model than you might innitially gravitate towards, especially if you suffer from similar discomfort.

Not The Best Motion Isolation

If you are going to be sleeping on the Luma hybrid mattress with a partner, a child, or maybe even a pet, as wonderful as it may be, you might find yourself being jolted awake every once in a while.

While the resistance and playful bounce are great in many cases (looking at you, lovebirds), early risers or restless sleepers can end up bouncing their sleep companions right out of their slumber.

The lack of motion isolation is something that should be noted to everyone considering the Luma mattress, even if they are not planning on sharing their bed with anyone, as too much bounce can be a dealbreaker to some.

Though not world-ending, these Luma mattress cons are very important to keep in mind while pondering over this model, as they can’t always be adapted to or ignored.

After all, your comfort comes first!

What Is The Luma Mattress Price?

When it came to the pricing part of this Luma mattress review, I was very pleasantly surprised.

Because latex is usually a more expensive material - especially when used in a hybrid mattress - I expected the Luma hybrid to be right up there with some of the more luxurious brands.

However, I'm super excited to tell you that these are some of the most affordable latex hybrid mattresses I’ve ever seen!

It goes without saying that the Luma hybrid mattress is quite budget-friendly and offers incredible quality for the price.

Luma Mattress Review: Luma policies.

In addition to pricing, those considering getting the Luma sleep mattress should also be aware of the policies the company has in place.

  • Availability: at the moment, all Luma mattresses are available on their online store only. Third-party retailers and physical stores do not carry any of their products.
  • Shipping: once you pay for your Luma mattress, it’s time to play the waiting game until your purchase arrives, which is around one to five business days.

Luma mattresses can be shipped to all 50 states and Canada. If you live within the contiguous borders of the U.S., your mattress will be delivered free of charge. Additional shipping fees apply to shipments going to Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada.

Luma mattresses are delivered wrapped in plastic and rolled up in a box, making setting it up quite simple - just place, break the air-tight seal and let the mattress unroll. Though uncommon, be prepared for a slight off-gassing scent that will disappear in less than a day.

If you prefer, you can pay $99 extra for White glove delivery. In other words, your mattress will be delivered ready to be slept on and placed where you want it. You also have the option to have your old mattress removed for a $50 fee.

    Luma Mattress Review: comfort exchange.

  • Trial: Luma offers a 100-night sleep trial. There is no mandatory break-in period, so you can return your mattress whenever you like within the trial period.

That said, the company does recommend giving the mattress at least a month before initiating a return.

If you decide that the Luma is not for you, the manufacturers will either take the mattress back or donate it, so you don’t have to worry about it ending up in a landfill after a few nights of use.

A refund can be issued for the entire price of the mattress, except for any additional charges, such as White Glove delivery or old mattress disposal fees.

  • Warranty: Luma mattresses come with a pretty standard 10-year warranty. During this time, the warranty covers defects in materials and manufacturing. The company will repair or replace a defective mattress and cover all shipping costs.

What I like about Luma is the transparency and simplicity of its policies. They are customer-oriented and are set in place to assure maximum comfort and convenience, which, keeping in mind the pricing of the mattress, is an incredible deal.

Are There Any Luma Mattress Discount Codes Available?

At the time of writing this Luma mattress review, there are discounts already applied to all sizes and firmness levels of the hybrid mattress.

If you are looking for Luma mattress discount codes, at the moment there aren’t any available. That being said, this article will be updated as soon as some discount codes come up, so you can be sure to get an even better deal.

Alternatives

While considering which mattress is the best for you, it’s natural and even recommended to have other options to compare the main contender to. This can help better understand the features you are considering, as well as open you up to potentially better alternatives.

In this part of our Luma mattress review, we will be looking into exactly that - alternative mattress models that can help put everything you’ve read thus far into perspective.

Saatva Latex Hybrid

Our first contender is perhaps the closest alternative to the Luma hybrid mattress. The Saatva latex hybrid is exactly what the name suggests, mixing high-quality Talalay latex and innerspring coils.

Saatva is perhaps the best-known mattress manufacturer in the market at the moment, offering high-end products that have become favorites all over the country.

Luma Mattress Review: Saatva latex hybrid mattress.

When it comes to the Saatva latex hybrid mattress, a lot of similarities jump out, especially when looking at the construction of both models. Both Saatva and Luma feature hypoallergenic latex that not only offers an adaptive surface to sleep on but makes sure your mattress stays with you for many years.

Another similarity is the pleasantly cooling nature of both mattresses that many owners report as a big perk.

And, of course, the responsive latex and supportive innerspring make both Saatva and Luma models very appealing to couples.

The key differences between the Saatva latex hybrid and Luma hybrid mattresses can be seen in the numbers.

For example, the Saatva model is notably heavier than the Luma, making setting up and potentially moving with the mattress in the future quite difficult.

Luma Mattress Review: Saatva latex hybrid mattress firmness.

And, perhaps the most important numbers of all, the difference in price. As the reputation and construction of the Saatva mattress suggest, you can expect the price to reflect the luxurious quality and brand name.

At the moment, the Saatva latex hybrid mattress prices are as such:

As you can see, the prices are quite steep compared to the Luma hybrid. However, Saatva is dominating the mattress industry for a reason. The quality and durability of this mattress are well worth the price.

If you are looking for a reputable and highly-renowned mattress to invest in, the Saatva Latex Hybrid is definitely one I would recommend.

Layla Hybrid Mattress

Do you have a hard time making up your mind and don’t know how to choose the right mattress firmness?

Well, luckily for you, we are living in the wonderful age of double-sided mattresses

That’s right - you will be getting two mattresses in one that you can choose the firmness of depending on how you are feeling that day or maybe even just based on your mood!

If you are looking for a hybrid mattress, but aren’t sold on the firmness of the latex or can’t choose the right model of the Luma sleep mattress, you and the Layla hybrid mattress might just be a match made in heaven!

Luma Mattress Review: Layla hybrid mattress.

The Layla hybrid mattress consists of a coil system, sandwiched between two sets of foam layers of varying thickness and firmness levels. This is what makes the mattress reversible - each side offers a different feel while still remaining hypoallergenic and cooling - just like the Luma hybrid mattress!

In addition, both mattresses are great for couples and pressure relief, which are very important factors to keep in mind.

One of the main differences between the two models is the fact that Layla uses foam instead of latex. Whether this is a good or a bad difference completely depends on your preferences, however, keep in mind that foam sleeps just a tiny bit warmer than latex.

When it comes to pricing, the Layla is a middle ground option between Saatva and Luma:

Layla is best recommended for those who toss and turn at night as it has barely any motion transfer and pretty much every sleeper type, no matter which position you prefer. If you are looking for a comfortable hybrid mattress with an option to choose your firmness level whenever you want, the Layla hybrid mattress can be a great alternative to the Luma Hybrid.

Conclusions

And just like that, we’ve come to the end of my Luma mattress review.

The only thing left to do now is to answer the burning question on everyone’s minds - is the Luma hybrid mattress worth your hard-earned money?

From what I noticed from all the Luma mattress reviews left by owners - it all depends on your preferences.

If you like a pretty firm, responsive mattress to sleep on, then the Luma hybrid is essentially made for you. However, if you prefer or require a more plush bed, you might want to look into other options, such as the Saatva latex hybrid or the Layla hybrid.

In general, the Luma Sleep mattress definitely has some great perks and can be a wonderful investment to the right people.

I hope this review proved to be useful and I wish you the sweetest of dreams!

FAQ

Are there any Luma mattress discount codes available?

At the moment there are no Luma mattress discount codes available online. However, as mentioned in the Luma mattress review, discounts are already applied to the product on their website.

What are some Luma mattress alternatives?

The Luma mattress is a latex and innerspring hybrid. If you are interested in a mattress with similar construction, you can check out the Saatva latex hybrid and Layla hybrid models. In addition, you can always take a look at our list of the best mattresses out there.

How to choose the best mattress for me?

When choosing the best mattress for yourself, there are a few important factors that you should consider. First of all, what type of mattress do you need? The most traditional mattresses are memory foam, innerspring and latex, but there are other options, too. Secondly, think about how much you can spend on a mattress, but remember it doesn’t mean that the mattress is better if it’s more expensive. Furthermore, pick a size and firmness depending on your preferences. Finally, think about your sleeping position, it will also influence your decision.

How much does a good mattress cost?

Mattress price usually varies depending on a few factors, such as mattress type, size, height, quality of the material and durability. Today the price of a mattress can vary from $150 to $7000. However, you can find a good mattress for under $1000. The average pricing of a foam mattress is about $900 dollars, innerspring $950. These are the least expensive mattresses. However, if you can afford more expensive ones, you can consider a hybrid mattress for about $1,650, latex - about $2,000.

What size mattress should I get?

Most mattress providers offer 6 standard sizes, including Twin, Twin XL, Full/Double, Queen, King, and California King. A Twin mattress is great for children or young adults who live alone. A Twin XL mattress is great for children or single adults but not comfortable for couples. A Full/Double bed is excellent for children and couples, however, it won’t work if both people like to have more space. Queen mattresses work great for adults who like to sleep near each other. A King bed is amazing for couples who like to have some space or sleep with a pet. Finally, a California King mattress is amazing for tall people and couples who like to have space or sleep with their pets.

How long does a mattress last? When should you replace your mattress?

Mattress durability depends on the materials that were used to make it. The average lifespan of a mattress varies from 7 to 10 years. However, good quality mattresses can last even longer. It is recommended to replace your mattress every 8 years, but if it still feels great, there’s no need. If you want to buy a mattress that lasts longer than average, you should consider latex or memory foam mattresses. These can serve up to 10 or 15 years while Innerspring mattresses usually last about 7-8 years.
