The New Earth Friendly Organic Mattress

Organic mattresses are the latest attempt from bedding manufacturers hoping to appeal to the eco-friendly customer.

These all natural bedding choices are very popular and selling fast but, what is an organic mattress and how will it help you sleep?

The All Natural Revolution

These natural mattresses are available in a range of sizes, from crib size to all of the standard mattress sizes.

To be certified as organic the mattress must be composed of only natural products, no man-made materials.

Experts warn consumers to look for labels that say the mattress has been “certified organic” as the terms green, eco-friendly, and other environmental terms do not confirm all natural construction.

Consumers can also look for the Greenguard Environmental Institute certification label. This label ensures the mattress you plan to purchase was constructed to meet indoor air quality standards and low emission standards. For allergy sufferers this certification is an added plus.

Natural Materials

All natural rubber used in these mattresses is harvested from the rubber tree plant. These plants are grown on rubber tree farms and harvested using methods that are not destructive to the plants.

The harvesting process uses the minimal amount of fossil fuel necessary to completely convert the rubber tree sap into a biodegradable latex product.

The manufacturers strive to use materials that are locally grown and that meet organic processing standards. The use of locally grown cotton and local wool supports the American farming industry and lowers fuel emissions that would result from long transports.

The mattress construction starts from the ground up. Bales of natural cotton and wool are used as the base of this type of bedding. Remember, organic means that no chemicals were used in the harvesting or growing processes of the wool or the cotton.

These fibers are naturally sanitized using a non-chemical method that reduces the chance of mold spores or bacteria growing in the bedding.

Popular Organic Mattresses

Several companies specialize in manufacturing these eco friendly mattresses. The most popular and well known mattresses come from Englander. They have a pure, all-natural latex core and are hand crafted using only organic and sustainable products. Englander mattresses are certified organic and even more comfortable than many non-organic mattresses.

Other certified organic mattresses include the Greensleep mattress and the Royal Pedic. The Greensleep mattress, like the Englander, has an all-natural rubber core. Each mattress is wrapped in organic cotton batting, covered in several layers of org. silk, and 2 layers of org. wool.

The Royal Pedic mattresses utilize an organic innercoil system unique to their brand. The innersprings are wrapped in natural wool to increase the life span of the mattress. As with other beds, the Royal Pedic uses 100 natural materials in their mattress construction.

Some mattress consumers fear they will have to sacrifice a good night’s sleep when buying organic. Not true, say mattress insiders. Today’s mattresses are some the best quality mattresses on the market. They are comfortable, orthopedic, allergy free, and help make the earth more livable – all at an affordable price.
